American Idol Is Bigger Than Ever

It was just six years ago, when American Idol* was first televised and a show bigger and more popular than most people could have imagined was born. Today it would be hard to find a person in America who hasn't at least heard of American Idol*. Love it or hate it, it is an American icon of a show that doesn't show signs of slowing down. In fact, it only seems to be getting bigger.

What was the first season like? The first two shows were dedicated to the judges, Randy Jackson, Paula Abdul, and Simon Cowell going to auditions (held in Chicago, New York, Dallas, Miami, Atlanta, Seattle, and Los Angeles) and finding contestants to send on to Hollywood week. One hundred twenty one contestants made it to Hollywood to try to earn one of the 30 spots to move on to the rounds where the public started voting.

During weeks three, four, and five of the show, 10 of the 30 contestants performed. America voted and only 3 out of each group of 10 moved on. Then, on week six, five wildcard contestants returned to the show with the judges picking one of those contestants to go on, for a total of 10 contestants in the final rounds.

The following week, two contestants were sent home. Then the show started eliminating contestants one by one until there were only two contestants left.

Kelly Clarkson and Justin Guarini were the season one finalists. Kelly took the crown on September 4, 2002 and has gone on to become a very successful pop artist with a couple of Grammy awards to her name, several hit songs, and several highly successful albums. She's become one of the top names in pop music.

After the first season ended, Kelly and Justin made a movie aptly titled "From Justin to Kelly," but their American Idol* popularity didn't transfer to the big movie screen. The movie was a flop, although the poor plot may have had a lot to do with its terrible performance.

Although the runners up in later seasons of American Idol have had as much, and sometimes more, success than the winner, that wasn't the case season 1's runner-up, Justin Guarini although the American Idol rules at that time probably contributed to his difficulties. At that time the Idol rules didn't allow Justin to release any albums or taking outside offers of any kind until Kelly's album was released. He was forced to turn down several offers to appear on television shows, to model for Tommy Hilfiger, and doing the soundtrack recording for at least one film.

By the time Justin was allowed to release his own album, he was competing with the releases of the Ruben Studdard and Clay Aiken, the season two winner and runner-up. His appearances on the newly syndicated show, American Idol Rewind, seem to be helping him gain more notice again.

Tamrya Gray, who finished fourth on the show, has been doing okay. She has released her first album to tepid sales, but has had some success with several acting projects she has done.

Nikki McKibbin, who finished third the first season, has struggled since American Idol ended but she is finally getting back to her musical roots. Her debut album is slated to be released May 1, 2007.

The most current season of American Idol*, season 7, will have several more episodes in it than the first season. Another notable difference is that during Hollywood week the judges (yes it's still Randy, Paula, and Simon) decide who the top 24 contestants are. Then for three weeks, the guys and girls sing on different nights and only compete among themselves. Each week, 2 guys and 2 girls are eliminated. Then when there are 6 guys and 6 girls left, those final 12 will start to compete head to head, regardless of gender.

Even if you aren't a fan of singing, you may want to watch the show just to see Simon Cowell, one of the judges, spew his very creative criticisms of the contestants each week. It's a fun show.

We all know how important music is in Bollywood movies. All Hindi movies strive to have good soulful musical tracks. Other popular songs in last few decades that made history on the basis of sheer mass appeal and recall value are,
"Papa kahte hain" from qayamat se qayamat tak,
"Tujhe Dekha Toh ye Jana Sanam" from Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge,
"Chaiyya Chaiyya" from Dil Se and "Kuch Kuch Hota Hai" from the movie Kuch Kuch Hota Hai. These songs are just few drops in the vast ocean of popular Bollywood film songs.

The Terrible Tale Of The Linton Worme

I count myself lucky to live in Northeast England one of the most beautiful and interesting parts of the UK. A region rich in history, a place of castles, countryside and coast, that is awash with the myths and legends of days gone by.

Having in another article, told you the tale of the famous Lambton Worm. The monstrous beast that wrapped its tail ten times around Penshaw Hill and of how Penshaw Monument came about. Now I want you to get in your car leave Penshaw behind and drive north through countryside of Northumberland until you reach the Scottish borders. It will take you little over two hours to reach the small settlement of Linton. You will find it on the B6436 six miles south of Kelso.

Near to the village you will find Linton Hill with the waters of the Kale flowing nearby. In this quiet spot in a cave beneath the Northeast side of the hill there once lived a worm or worme, (worme is ancient Norse for serpent). The area is still known as 'Worm's Den'. From here at dawn and at dusk the dragon would leave it's lair killing and eating the local livestock and anything else it came across.

Despite being terrified of the fearsome beast some of the local men tried to kill it, but their weapons proved ineffective against its armoured hide. Unhindered by the men's puny efforts the beast laid waste to the countryside and none could stop its rampaging ways.

None that is, until, while on a visit to nearby Jedburgh, the Laird, John de Somerville heard tell of this fearsome worm. Making his way to Linton he observed the creature from a distance. He noticed that when anyone came near, the vile creature would stand watching with its mouth open wide. This gave him an idea and he ordered the local blacksmith to produce a special lance. The weapon was much longer than the normal lance and had a spiked wheel fitted at the business end. Unto this wheel the laird fixed a tar soaked bale of peat and setting fire to the bale, he charge back and forth to get his horse used to the smoke and flames.

Finally when he was satisfied he rode out to confront the worm. As he came near the worm opened its mouth and he rammed the flaming lance down its throat. The creature in its death throes twisted this way and that, writhing in agony and it is said that this caused of the undulations in the hillsides outside the den. Eventually the mortally wounded creature returned to its lair and the roof collapsed burying it (conveniently) without trace beneath the hill.

Did the worm (or dragon) exist? Or is it just one of the many myths that abound in the British Isles? Whether it did or not, it is said that in recognition of his bravery John de Somerville was knighted, made a Royal Falconer and became the first Baron of Lintoune.

Dragon or not, Linton and Linton Hill still exist and if you want to make your way there. Here are the directions from Penshaw. Follow the A19 north through the Tyne Tunnel and carry on until the A19 meets the A1 junction. Take the A1 north. Just past Morpeth turn left onto A697 heading for Wooler and Coldstream. Not long after Wooler, at Akeld turn left onto the B6531. Follow this until it joins the B6352 and follow the B6352 to Town Yetholm. From here take the B6401 and then just before Morebattle, turn right onto the B5436 for Linton.

You might not see a dragon when you get there, but you will have enjoyed a trip through some of the Northeast's most beautiful countryside. Take a look at Linton Kirk (Church) while you are there and you will see above the porch doorway, The Somervail Stone. It is a carving depicting a knight fighting two beasts, a link to the Linton Worm.

Why is society so caught up in celebrity gossip? Celebrities are put on pedestals and the more popular they are, the more they are scrutinized in the media. Some celebrities cannot leave their own home without being snapped for photos by paparazzi. Their life is on watch 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Celebrity gossip magazines and some web sites are making millions of dollars a year by posting the personal details of Hollywood's famous stars.

Society is fascinated by celebrities because they are constantly on the big screen or television. Their talent and most of the time, their good looks is what attracts loyal fans. The fact that most celebrities are filthy rich is also an attraction. When celebrities make it big, they are even less accessible which makes people even more curious about every aspect of their lives from who they are dating to what they are wearing. Sometimes a fan's love for a celebrity can get out of hand. Some celebrities have dealt with the obsessive fan who does not understand their boundaries. Brad Pitt once had a woman break into his home while countless stars have filed restraining orders against stalkers.

The main attraction to celebrity gossip is simply wanting to watch celebrity train wrecks. Britney Spears is a prime example of a young star whose life went from stardom to mayhem. She was once the pop idol every little girl wanted to imitate to a woman who shaved her head and lost custody of her children. Some celebrities cannot handle the fame and fortune at a young age. Gossip magazines and web sites must be on top of the latest news to compete with each other. The popular gossip blog "Perez Hilton" ran by Mario Lavandeira has over a million plus visitors per day. Lavandeira has stated that it is hard work keeping the blog up to date and is known to start his day from the early mornings to late at night posting the latests gossip.

What makes Perez Hilton stand out from his competitors is because he doesn't hold back his opinion and the site is known for "outing" many celebrities. The site is credited for outing former Nsync band member Lance Bass before he made his own announcement of being gay. People's curiosities are satisfied from gossip sites such as these. Most people love when a celebrity has screwed up. Celebrity couples are also big news, along with celebrity divorces and kids.

One area of celebrity life I feel should be off limits are the children. Very often, these kids are hounded by the paparazzi as well. I think they should be allowed to live as normal as possible without cameras in their faces for everything that they do. Children should not have to deal with what their famous parents deal with. Some celebrity parents do not protect their children enough and often you will see these kids start off on drugs and alcohol at a young age. Some celebrities protect their children so well that you never see what they look like.

Celebrity gossip will continue to fascinate society as it is as entertaining as watching television or going to the movies. Just remember that these celebrities are people too and deal with the media backlash on a regular basis.

Building A Photographic Portfolio

When you start looking for photography jobs and assignments, the first thing your client wants to see is some samples of your photography work. These samples collected together are called a portfolio. Your first step to making money from your photography is building a credible portfolio of your best work. There are several ways that you can do this.

Working at a non-profit charitable event: Non-profit charitable events are great experience and you will give you the chance to collect a lot of good photographic samples from these events for your portfolio. You may not get paid but you will gain a lot of experience and you will get some good shots.

Voluntary work: you can volunteer for some jobs and do them free just to build up your experience and portfolio. I have done free photography for bands in he past and had a real good time doing it.

Collecting some of your best shots together: As you take photos you can save some of your best to put in your portfolio. When photography is your hobby you will find many places to take pictures. I like to pick a theme and develop some photography shots on that theme. For example I live near the sea, so I would go to the beach and take loads of pictures, then when I get home sort the best ones out. Then do some photoshop enhancements to the pictures. But would be editing through to find the best ones so that I can use in my portfolio.

Taking some pictures of family and friends events: This is great way to learn how to take photos of people. You can take pictures at family or friends events and keep a few for your portfolio, also they make great gifts to give to them. This will also give you good experience to perfect your skills and this will look good in the portfolio.

It is important to know just what area of photography you will be specializing in before you start to build your portfolio. Once you have decided this you can then start to build up a good collection of photo portfolio samples relevant to the type of photography you are into. It is good to show off your range of skills as a photographer. Take different photos from different angles and really show that you can master the different lighting set ups.

Make sure that you present your portfolio extremely well. Put your photos in nice looking portfolio folder that shows your professionalism. You can create a slick laptop presentation and show them off in style. A good idea would be to design a logo or think about creating a brand for yourself. So you can use this on all your photo samples, website and promotional material.

Your portfolio is critical to your photography business. Make sure that you take care to prepare it very well. It is your first introduction to your clients and first impressions are lasting ones. Your portfolio is also the means that your prospective clients will know that they can trust you to take fantastic pictures for them. You need to make your portfolio stand out from the rest. So the more time you take grooming the portfolio the better. Build confidence and trust in your prospective client.

The Twinkling Sound Of The Celesta

Few will have heard of a transposing instrument, though those who are very involved with music will be familiar with it. A transposing instrument is one that has special music written for it that is at a different pitch than the concert pitch. So, when other music that is written at the concert pitch reads a C, the transposing instrument music will show a different note.

Instruments, like the celesta, that are referred to as transposing instruments will play the special music. The difference is not really in the instrument, it is just that the sheet music that is written will read differently than it does for the other instruments involved in the piece.

One might wonder why there would be use for a transposing instrument. Transposition at the octave is one reason for having a transposing instrument. Some instruments are too high or too low to write in for a particular piece of music, so to limit the ledger lines used, someone might instead write the part an octave higher or lower for the piece. If there is a musical piece that is using a number of instruments from the same family, a transposing instrument might be necessary.

The different ranges that the different sizes of the instruments within the same family have, may differ too much because they are either too low or too high. To make the music more uniform and to make it easier on the musicians who have to switch instruments throughout the piece, the composer will write some pieces in for some transposing instruments that will need to play an octave lower or higher.

The tone and the quality of the sound is another reason for wanting to have a transposing instrument. It is sometimes necessary to include this in a piece so that the different instruments playing together will have a better sound that is less divided and more harmonized.

As explained earlier, the term "transposing instrument" is a little misleading. One might make the mistake of thinking that there are specific instruments that are regarded as transposing instruments that are only used for that purpose. It is actually the music that changes. When an instrument is found or thought to be too high or too low, which does not fit well with the sounds of the other instruments, the composer will find it necessary to write different music for that instrument in order to make it sound better with the other instruments it is being played with. This means that just about any instrument can be a transposing instrument, because the musician is playing it in a different octave than the other instruments.

It really makes a lot of sense when one thinks about it. When an instrument is too high, all one has to do is bring it down a pitch to make it more uniform with the other pitches and sounds around it. The idea is to have harmony in a musical piece where the different instruments' sounds belong together. If the composer didn't alter the music of some of these instruments, they would not be able to play in the piece without disrupting the harmony of the rest of the instruments playing together.

The Library

The library is great place to look for Urdu poetry because they normally have a lot of books to choose from and may have a great section on this kind of poetry. You can look up the authors of the poetry in the file index at the library. This is the best place to start when looking in your local library. You may be able to find translated poetry this way for you to use in your Hindu learning. It's also a great way to learn the culture that you may not be familiar with at all.

The Internet

The Internet is another great place to start looking because it is a great place to get a lot of information fast and conveniently. Urdu poetry is easy to find on the Internet because anyone in any part of the world can add their web page and their information to it. Urdu poetry is something that anyone that loves to read poetry can look for and learn to read with ease. If you find that you start to love the poetry, then you can even learn Hindu from the web so that you can read it in the language that it was meant to be in, in the first place.

Family Members

If you are Hindu, then you may be able to learn a lot from your family and maybe be able to get some Urdu poetry from them as well. This is great for you because you will be able to learn thesis kind of thing from your family and start a tradition that you can pass on to your own kids in the future. Families that have this kind of thing to hand down are more apt to be closer and have more things to share as a family unit. If you think that you want to pass these Urdu poetry pieces down to your kids as well as keeping a tradition alive that has been around for many years.
