Austin Texas Book Festival

If music festivals such as South by Southwest and the Austin City Limits festival are testament to the city's reputation as the Live Music Capitol of the World, the Texas Book Festival is proof positive that Austin is a hotbed of creativity in the literary world as well. Founded by Laura Bush in 1995, it has grown to become a nationally important event, featuring over two thousand authors, local, national and international, in twelve years of existence. Exciting, fun, musical and educational, this all-ages event is considered to be one of the premiere literary events in the country.

Located primarily in the State Capitol, the festival takes place every fall, drawing upwards of 40,000 spectators to delight in panels, concerts, demonstrations, and other activities in the House and Senate Chambers, as well as tents and stages erected on the sprawling green lawn of the Capitol grounds. Bill Clinton, Barack Obama, and other high-profile politicos have given keynote addresses, and the late Governor Ann Richards was a regular as well. Kay Bailey Hutchison, Jim Lehrer, and Roy Blount Jr., and other such notables have made appearances as well.

A variety of themes are represented at the festival, with panels dedicated to mysteries, biographies, photography, retrospectives, periodicals, journalism, and many other topics. A "Lifestyle" tent hosts discussions and activities including parenting, wineries, birding, and yard art.

In keeping with the interests and expectations of Austinites, the festival emphasizes a high level of entertainment and music, dedicating one tent to musical performances throughout the festival, and hosting events at satellite locations including the legendary Continental Club. A concert featuring Austin's finest musicians is held on the Capitol steps. Musician authors such as Joe Ely read from their works, as do those who write books about musicians, including Kathleen Hudson and Joe Nick Patoski.

Other aspects of the entertainment world are well-represented also. Actors including Eli Wallach and Marlee Matlin have appeared there, and Top Chef host Padma Lakshmi offered live cooking demos for exotic recipes. Food and cooking are also highlighted, with an entire tent equipped with cooking supplies and dedicated to cookbooks and examinations of food culture.

The Texas Book Festival has raised over two million dollars for Texas Public Libraries, and their commitment to children is clear. With one tent dedicated to children's authors, one to children's entertainment, and one to activities for the little ones, this festival is a perfect way to combine books and literacy with a fun and exciting event. Storytimes abound throughout the festival, and activities can include hula dance, puppet shows, drawing, and sing-alongs. When children's authors are in town for the festival, they often take part in "Reading Rock Stars," an affiliated program that brings them to public schools to read their works.

A truly Austin event in spirit, the Texas Book Festival is a lively, creative and exciting way to explore the literary world both on a local and national level.

Bob Hope: His Classic Television Performances

Subscribe in a Reader

DON'T FORGET TO COMMENT ON THIS ARTICLE

by Ben Anton

Bob Hope is hands-down the most acclaimed, honored and versatile entertainer in show business history. During his seventy-plus years in the entertainment industry, Hope earned more than two thousand awards and recognitions for his various professional and humanitarian work, including an honorary knighthood from Queen Elizabeth II, a Congressional Gold Medal from President Kennedy, the Medal of Freedom from President Johnson, and fifty-four honorary doctorates. Hope's Christmas specials, USO shows, radio and television programs, and regular appearances on numerous sitcoms and variety shows have some of the highest ratings of any primetime telecasts. Because of this well-deserved praise, it is difficult to choose only a few television appearances as the "Best Of" Hope's career. Instead, it is better to look at the huge variety of shows Hope appeared on and why this versatile performer became America's most beloved entertainer.

Born in England May 29, 1903, Hope and his family traveled to America in 1908 aboard the SS Philadelphia. Ironically, Hope was a relative latecomer to television; he dabbled in experimental broadcasts with NBC in the 1930s but held off almost twenty years before starting his illustrious career. He began his official television career on Easter Sunday, 1950, on NBC. His specials, most of which were sponsored by the Chrysler corporation, were often hysterically unscripted variety programs that featured such guest stars as Douglas Fairbanks, Jr., Marilyn Monroe and Dina Shore.

Christmas Specials

Hope got significant recognition for his gut-busting Christmas specials. These specials ran for years and featured duet performances of "Silver Bells" by Hope and adorable young guest stars, such as Olivia Newton-John and Brooke Shields. The most memorable Bob Hope Christmas specials were, without a doubt, his 1970 and 1971 episodes. Filmed in front of military audiences at the height of the Vietnam War, these specials actually aired in January –after Hope was back in the United States— and were seen by more than sixty percent of television-viewing households in America. Like his other Christmas specials, the Vietnam shows were all about celebrating the traditional joy, peace and good cheer of the season. His use of humor, beautiful women and talented performers were a welcome respite from the horrors of the war itself.

USO Performances

Hope is probably best known for his performances for the United Service Organization (USO), beginning with his USO debut at March Field, California, on May 6, 1941. Hope performed USO shows throughout World War II, prompting acclaim from such contemporaries as John Steinbeck. "It is impossible to see how he can do so much," Steinbeck wrote in 1943, "can cover so much ground, can work so hard, and can be so effective." Hope continued his USO shows during the Korean War, Vietnam War and Persian Gulf War, heading roughly sixty tours in total. Because of his tireless dedication to the overseas troops, Hope was awarded the impressive Sylvanus Thayer Award by the U.S. Military Academy in 1968. He was named an Honorary Veteran by a 1997 act of Congress, signed by President Clinton, a recognition Hope referred to as "the greatest honor I have ever received."

Sitcom Appearances

Hope also appeared on a number of popular television programs during his career. Hope did a guest spot on America's favorite TV show of the 1950s, "I Love Lucy". Supposedly, Hope balked at the idea of using a script. He ad-libbed the entire episode, legend goes, giving one of his best performances in the process. He also appeared on the Danny Thomas Show, the Jack Benny Show, the Ed Sullivan Show, the Donny & Marie Show, and others.

Saying Good Bye

Hope bid a nostalgic farewell to his television audiences in 1996 with "Laughing with the Presidents," a special he co-hosted with Tony Danza. In this special, Hope gave a very personal tribute to the U.S. presidents he had known and worked with during his career; Roosevelt, Eisenhower, Nixon, Ford, Kennedy, Johnson, Reagan, Bush, Clinton, and others. The show was a fitting and entertaining good-bye to the hardest working entertainer in American history.

It's not surprising that Bob Hope was so heavily recognized for his work. Radio and television programs, USO shows, Christmas specials, books, movies; the man did it all. He helped the world smile during troubling times. He lent his celebrity status to good causes. He championed humor and fun as the best tool in achieving peace at home and abroad. Hope wasn't only a great entertainer; he was an amazing humanitarian.

American Idol Is Bigger Than Ever

DON'T FORGET TO COMMENT ON THIS ARTICLE

by Sheezaym

It was just six years ago, when American Idol* was first televised and a show bigger and more popular than most people could have imagined was born. Today it would be hard to find a person in America who hasn't at least heard of American Idol*. Love it or hate it, it is an American icon of a show that doesn't show signs of slowing down. In fact, it only seems to be getting bigger.

What was the first season like? The first two shows were dedicated to the judges, Randy Jackson, Paula Abdul, and Simon Cowell going to auditions (held in Chicago, New York, Dallas, Miami, Atlanta, Seattle, and Los Angeles) and finding contestants to send on to Hollywood week. One hundred twenty one contestants made it to Hollywood to try to earn one of the 30 spots to move on to the rounds where the public started voting.

During weeks three, four, and five of the show, 10 of the 30 contestants performed. America voted and only 3 out of each group of 10 moved on. Then, on week six, five wildcard contestants returned to the show with the judges picking one of those contestants to go on, for a total of 10 contestants in the final rounds.

The following week, two contestants were sent home. Then the show started eliminating contestants one by one until there were only two contestants left.

Kelly Clarkson and Justin Guarini were the season one finalists. Kelly took the crown on September 4, 2002 and has gone on to become a very successful pop artist with a couple of Grammy awards to her name, several hit songs, and several highly successful albums. She's become one of the top names in pop music.

After the first season ended, Kelly and Justin made a movie aptly titled "From Justin to Kelly," but their American Idol* popularity didn't transfer to the big movie screen. The movie was a flop, although the poor plot may have had a lot to do with its terrible performance.

Although the runners up in later seasons of American Idol have had as much, and sometimes more, success than the winner, that wasn't the case season 1's runner-up, Justin Guarini although the American Idol rules at that time probably contributed to his difficulties. At that time the Idol rules didn't allow Justin to release any albums or taking outside offers of any kind until Kelly's album was released. He was forced to turn down several offers to appear on television shows, to model for Tommy Hilfiger, and doing the soundtrack recording for at least one film.

By the time Justin was allowed to release his own album, he was competing with the releases of the Ruben Studdard and Clay Aiken, the season two winner and runner-up. His appearances on the newly syndicated show, American Idol Rewind, seem to be helping him gain more notice again.

Tamrya Gray, who finished fourth on the show, has been doing okay. She has released her first album to tepid sales, but has had some success with several acting projects she has done.

Nikki McKibbin, who finished third the first season, has struggled since American Idol ended but she is finally getting back to her musical roots. Her debut album is slated to be released May 1, 2007.

The most current season of American Idol*, season 7, will have several more episodes in it than the first season. Another notable difference is that during Hollywood week the judges (yes it's still Randy, Paula, and Simon) decide who the top 24 contestants are. Then for three weeks, the guys and girls sing on different nights and only compete among themselves. Each week, 2 guys and 2 girls are eliminated. Then when there are 6 guys and 6 girls left, those final 12 will start to compete head to head, regardless of gender.

Even if you aren't a fan of singing, you may want to watch the show just to see Simon Cowell, one of the judges, spew his very creative criticisms of the contestants each week. It's a fun show.

The Terrible Tale Of The Linton Worme

DON'T FORGET TO COMMENT ON THIS ARTICLE

by Fred Watson

I count myself lucky to live in Northeast England one of the most beautiful and interesting parts of the UK. A region rich in history, a place of castles, countryside and coast, that is awash with the myths and legends of days gone by.

Having in another article, told you the tale of the famous Lambton Worm. The monstrous beast that wrapped its tail ten times around Penshaw Hill and of how Penshaw Monument came about. Now I want you to get in your car leave Penshaw behind and drive north through countryside of Northumberland until you reach the Scottish borders. It will take you little over two hours to reach the small settlement of Linton. You will find it on the B6436 six miles south of Kelso.

Near to the village you will find Linton Hill with the waters of the Kale flowing nearby. In this quiet spot in a cave beneath the Northeast side of the hill there once lived a worm or worme, (worme is ancient Norse for serpent). The area is still known as 'Worm's Den'. From here at dawn and at dusk the dragon would leave it's lair killing and eating the local livestock and anything else it came across.

Despite being terrified of the fearsome beast some of the local men tried to kill it, but their weapons proved ineffective against its armoured hide. Unhindered by the men's puny efforts the beast laid waste to the countryside and none could stop its rampaging ways.

None that is, until, while on a visit to nearby Jedburgh, the Laird, John de Somerville heard tell of this fearsome worm. Making his way to Linton he observed the creature from a distance. He noticed that when anyone came near, the vile creature would stand watching with its mouth open wide. This gave him an idea and he ordered the local blacksmith to produce a special lance. The weapon was much longer than the normal lance and had a spiked wheel fitted at the business end. Unto this wheel the laird fixed a tar soaked bale of peat and setting fire to the bale, he charge back and forth to get his horse used to the smoke and flames.

Finally when he was satisfied he rode out to confront the worm. As he came near the worm opened its mouth and he rammed the flaming lance down its throat. The creature in its death throes twisted this way and that, writhing in agony and it is said that this caused of the undulations in the hillsides outside the den. Eventually the mortally wounded creature returned to its lair and the roof collapsed burying it (conveniently) without trace beneath the hill.

Did the worm (or dragon) exist? Or is it just one of the many myths that abound in the British Isles? Whether it did or not, it is said that in recognition of his bravery John de Somerville was knighted, made a Royal Falconer and became the first Baron of Lintoune.

Dragon or not, Linton and Linton Hill still exist and if you want to make your way there. Here are the directions from Penshaw. Follow the A19 north through the Tyne Tunnel and carry on until the A19 meets the A1 junction. Take the A1 north. Just past Morpeth turn left onto A697 heading for Wooler and Coldstream. Not long after Wooler, at Akeld turn left onto the B6531. Follow this until it joins the B6352 and follow the B6352 to Town Yetholm. From here take the B6401 and then just before Morebattle, turn right onto the B5436 for Linton.

You might not see a dragon when you get there, but you will have enjoyed a trip through some of the Northeast's most beautiful countryside. Take a look at Linton Kirk (Church) while you are there and you will see above the porch doorway, The Somervail Stone. It is a carving depicting a knight fighting two beasts, a link to the Linton Worm.

Fred Watson published his first book, a fantasy adventure novel aimed at the 8-12 age group, in November 2006. A grandfather of four, he loves to write for all age groups, has an abiding interest in history and continues on a regular basis to add new stories etc to his website. Footprint Publishing

The Fascination With Celebrity Gossip

Subscribe in a Reader

DON'T FORGET TO COMMENT ON THIS ARTICLE

by Eartha Haines

Why is society so caught up in celebrity gossip? Celebrities are put on pedestals and the more popular they are, the more they are scrutinized in the media. Some celebrities cannot leave their own home without being snapped for photos by paparazzi. Their life is on watch 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Celebrity gossip magazines and some web sites are making millions of dollars a year by posting the personal details of Hollywood's famous stars.

Society is fascinated by celebrities because they are constantly on the big screen or television. Their talent and most of the time, their good looks is what attracts loyal fans. The fact that most celebrities are filthy rich is also an attraction. When celebrities make it big, they are even less accessible which makes people even more curious about every aspect of their lives from who they are dating to what they are wearing. Sometimes a fan's love for a celebrity can get out of hand. Some celebrities have dealt with the obsessive fan who does not understand their boundaries. Brad Pitt once had a woman break into his home while countless stars have filed restraining orders against stalkers.

The main attraction to celebrity gossip is simply wanting to watch celebrity train wrecks. Britney Spears is a prime example of a young star whose life went from stardom to mayhem. She was once the pop idol every little girl wanted to imitate to a woman who shaved her head and lost custody of her children. Some celebrities cannot handle the fame and fortune at a young age. Gossip magazines and web sites must be on top of the latest news to compete with each other. The popular gossip blog "Perez Hilton" ran by Mario Lavandeira has over a million plus visitors per day. Lavandeira has stated that it is hard work keeping the blog up to date and is known to start his day from the early mornings to late at night posting the latests gossip.

What makes Perez Hilton stand out from his competitors is because he doesn't hold back his opinion and the site is known for "outing" many celebrities. The site is credited for outing former Nsync band member Lance Bass before he made his own announcement of being gay. People's curiosities are satisfied from gossip sites such as these. Most people love when a celebrity has screwed up. Celebrity couples are also big news, along with celebrity divorces and kids.

One area of celebrity life I feel should be off limits are the children. Very often, these kids are hounded by the paparazzi as well. I think they should be allowed to live as normal as possible without cameras in their faces for everything that they do. Children should not have to deal with what their famous parents deal with. Some celebrity parents do not protect their children enough and often you will see these kids start off on drugs and alcohol at a young age. Some celebrities protect their children so well that you never see what they look like.

Celebrity gossip will continue to fascinate society as it is as entertaining as watching television or going to the movies. Just remember that these celebrities are people too and deal with the media backlash on a regular basis.

Top 3 Underrated Horror Blu-Rays

Subscribe in a Reader

DON'T FORGET TO COMMENT ON THIS ARTICLE

by mdc2727

These are three horror movies you may not have seen on Blu-Ray. 28 Days later being my favorite of the three. Here is a review for each film.

28 Days Later: Hailed as the most frightening film since The Exorcist, acclaimed Director Danny Boyle's visionary take on zombie horror "isn't just scary it's absolutely terrifying" (Access Hollywood). An infirmary patient awakens from a coma to an empty room in a vacant hospital in a deserted city. A powerful virus, which locks victims into a permanent state of murderous rage, has transformed the world around him into a seemingly desolate wasteland. Now a handful of survivors must fight to stay alive, unaware that the worst is yet to come.

Bram Stokers' Dracula: Columbia Pictures Bram Stoker's Dracula (Collector's Edition) (Blu-ray)
Gary Oldman, Winona Ryder and Anthony Hopkins star in director Francis Ford Coppola's visually stunning, passionately seductive version of the classic Dracula legend. In "Bram Stoker's Dracula," Coppola returns to the original source of the Dracula myth, and from that gothic romance, he creates a modern masterpiece. Gary Oldman's metamorphosis as Dracula who grows from old to young, from man to beast is nothing short of amazing. Winona Ryder brings equal intensity to the role of a young beauty who becomes the object of Dracula's devastating desire. Anthony Hopkins co-stars as the famed doctor who dares to believe in Dracula, and then dares to confront him. Opulent, dazzling and utterly irresistible, this is Dracula as you've never seen him. And once you've seen "Bram Stoker's Dracula," you'll never forget it.

American Psycho:Lionsgate American Psycho (Blu-Ray)
Patrick Bateman (Christian Bale) is a Wall Street yuppie, obsessed withsuccess, status and style, with a stunning fiancee (Reese Witherspoon). He is also a psychotic killer who rapes, murders and dismembers both strangers and acquaintances without provocation or purpose. Based on the controversial novel, the film offers a sharp satire to the dark side of yuppie culture in the '80s, while setting forth a vision that is both terrifying and chilling

Building A Photographic Portfolio

Subscribe in a Reader

DON'T FORGET TO COMMENT ON THIS ARTICLE

by gordonpowles

When you start looking for photography jobs and assignments, the first thing your client wants to see is some samples of your photography work. These samples collected together are called a portfolio. Your first step to making money from your photography is building a credible portfolio of your best work. There are several ways that you can do this.

Working at a non-profit charitable event: Non-profit charitable events are great experience and you will give you the chance to collect a lot of good photographic samples from these events for your portfolio. You may not get paid but you will gain a lot of experience and you will get some good shots.

Voluntary work: you can volunteer for some jobs and do them free just to build up your experience and portfolio. I have done free photography for bands in he past and had a real good time doing it.

Collecting some of your best shots together: As you take photos you can save some of your best to put in your portfolio. When photography is your hobby you will find many places to take pictures. I like to pick a theme and develop some photography shots on that theme. For example I live near the sea, so I would go to the beach and take loads of pictures, then when I get home sort the best ones out. Then do some photoshop enhancements to the pictures. But would be editing through to find the best ones so that I can use in my portfolio.

Taking some pictures of family and friends events: This is great way to learn how to take photos of people. You can take pictures at family or friends events and keep a few for your portfolio, also they make great gifts to give to them. This will also give you good experience to perfect your skills and this will look good in the portfolio.

It is important to know just what area of photography you will be specializing in before you start to build your portfolio. Once you have decided this you can then start to build up a good collection of photo portfolio samples relevant to the type of photography you are into. It is good to show off your range of skills as a photographer. Take different photos from different angles and really show that you can master the different lighting set ups.

Make sure that you present your portfolio extremely well. Put your photos in nice looking portfolio folder that shows your professionalism. You can create a slick laptop presentation and show them off in style. A good idea would be to design a logo or think about creating a brand for yourself. So you can use this on all your photo samples, website and promotional material.

Your portfolio is critical to your photography business. Make sure that you take care to prepare it very well. It is your first introduction to your clients and first impressions are lasting ones. Your portfolio is also the means that your prospective clients will know that they can trust you to take fantastic pictures for them. You need to make your portfolio stand out from the rest. So the more time you take grooming the portfolio the better. Build confidence and trust in your prospective client.

The Twinkling Sound Of The Celesta

Subscribe in a Reader

DON'T FORGET TO COMMENT ON THIS ARTICLE

by Victor Epand

Few will have heard of a transposing instrument, though those who are very involved with music will be familiar with it. A transposing instrument is one that has special music written for it that is at a different pitch than the concert pitch. So, when other music that is written at the concert pitch reads a C, the transposing instrument music will show a different note.

Instruments, like the celesta, that are referred to as transposing instruments will play the special music. The difference is not really in the instrument, it is just that the sheet music that is written will read differently than it does for the other instruments involved in the piece.

One might wonder why there would be use for a transposing instrument. Transposition at the octave is one reason for having a transposing instrument. Some instruments are too high or too low to write in for a particular piece of music, so to limit the ledger lines used, someone might instead write the part an octave higher or lower for the piece. If there is a musical piece that is using a number of instruments from the same family, a transposing instrument might be necessary.

The different ranges that the different sizes of the instruments within the same family have, may differ too much because they are either too low or too high. To make the music more uniform and to make it easier on the musicians who have to switch instruments throughout the piece, the composer will write some pieces in for some transposing instruments that will need to play an octave lower or higher.

The tone and the quality of the sound is another reason for wanting to have a transposing instrument. It is sometimes necessary to include this in a piece so that the different instruments playing together will have a better sound that is less divided and more harmonized.

As explained earlier, the term "transposing instrument" is a little misleading. One might make the mistake of thinking that there are specific instruments that are regarded as transposing instruments that are only used for that purpose. It is actually the music that changes. When an instrument is found or thought to be too high or too low, which does not fit well with the sounds of the other instruments, the composer will find it necessary to write different music for that instrument in order to make it sound better with the other instruments it is being played with. This means that just about any instrument can be a transposing instrument, because the musician is playing it in a different octave than the other instruments.

It really makes a lot of sense when one thinks about it. When an instrument is too high, all one has to do is bring it down a pitch to make it more uniform with the other pitches and sounds around it. The idea is to have harmony in a musical piece where the different instruments' sounds belong together. If the composer didn't alter the music of some of these instruments, they would not be able to play in the piece without disrupting the harmony of the rest of the instruments playing together.

"A magical picture that builds an atmosphere of life"

When creating an oil painting, an artist will add layer upon layer of paint. The canvas surface is no longer flat and dull. The finished painting will have a dynamic surface that builds interest and personality

"The surface of the painted canvas has depth and texture"

To create great Art involves far more. Each painting has a hidden history

What you don't see when you look at a painting are the plans and preparations. There are thoughts, ideas and research hidden behind each brushstroke

* With forgotten preparatory drawings

* Color sketches hidden in old art folders

* Old ideas covered by later repainting

Even if you are an artist who can create exact copies of what you can see, your painting needs you to give more

* Your painting needs understanding and feeling before it becomes Art

* Your flair and expression gives your painting character

* Your painting's success comes from your time and dedication

If you use photographs, make your painting an impression of what you see. Combine details from one photograph with the background of another. Play with components to create a new reality

* Introduce recollections and memories

* Let your picture tell a story

* Use vibrant colors

An active drawing allows you to get away with mistakes when you work from real life. You can disguise weakness in your drawing skills with confident line-work even poor perspectives

* With a still life drawing, let the sweep of movement of your ink drawn arcs mask the slightly distorted shape of a vase of flowers

* In pencil figure drawing, lively shading can hide body forms that are wrong

* In a landscape sketch, a quick swish of charcoal will make your trees move with the wind

* Sea wave power will be captured by a swirling dash of crayon

You can easily add more interest to you drawings Leave the sketch outlines showing. Your drawings will rank high when your pencil marks show movement and growth.

Distinguish your original art creation from a machine produced print. Don't hide your talents Let the painting process show through

* With oils and acrylics you can show your painting skills when you allow visible brush marks in finished paintings

* You can lift your paintings with a splash of color

* Use water to carry color in your flowing watercolor paintings

As an art beginner or intermediate painter take the lead from professional artists. Add soul to your painting and drawing. Don't allow your art to suffer

Paintings and drawings that are perfect looking copies can appear mechanical and lifeless. In the search for perfection be careful that you aren't missing the key ingredient all artists should search for.

How to select a winner through showdown

by Saatchi Gallery

If the term 'showdown' conjures up images in your head of bloodthirsty cowboys battling it out to the end, think again. While the Saatchi Gallery's Showdown feature does involve a certain level of competitiveness, it also seems to be a feature where there are only winners, and no losers.

Showdown is an innovative development in Saatchi's online presence that allows emerging artists to showcase their works on the website and build their online profiles and portfolios. The Art room is a particularly enticing section where artwork from children of all ages can be viewed. This is one website where the charming squiggles made by a two-year-old can rightly demand their status as art alongside sophisticated and elaborate oils and watercolors by adult artists. An especially innovative feature of this section is that art can be made as well as displayed online.

One of the most alluring and unusual features of the Showdown section is that visitors to the website can vote for each image on a scale of one to ten. Handy links are also available with each image so that visitors can email their favorite images to their friends quickly and easily. Users can also develop a favorites list so that they can store links to images by their favorite artists, and view new work by them. Works that others have recently added to their favorites can also be viewed on the home screen. The popularity of an artist or an image can increase greatly depending on viewers' perceptions of it. Voting consists of several rounds with individual winners, and an overall winner is chosen at the end.

Digital Photography: Do Megapixels Really Matter?

Subscribe in a Reader

DON'T FORGET TO COMMENT ON THIS ARTICLE

by Andrew Goodall

Is 'megapixel' the most overused word in the language of digital photography?

Tell anyone you are thinking of buying a new digital camera, and the first question they will probably ask you is "How many megapixels does it have?" In my gallery I often overhear comments like "I would love to take better photos, but my camera doesn't have enough megapixels."

Like computers and the internet, digital photography has bred two types of 'expert.' There are people who know a lot. Then there are the people who know just a little, but think they know everything. Many of these people have been persuaded (most likely by a salesman trying to increase his commission) that the key to good photography is a high megapixel rating. By clinging to this notion, they may well be ignoring more important factors that could help them become better photographers.

The number of pixels in a photo determines how much you can enlarge the picture without losing image quality. The more megapixels, the bigger the print. But how important is this really, for most photographers in today's digital world?

Let's forget about the size of the enlargement for a moment. How many photos these days are ever printed at all, let alone enlarged to poster size? Gone are the days of shooting photos on negative film, and printing them to see the results. These days we see the results immediately in the camera, and can look at them in better detail on the computer screen. In fact, by eliminating the cost of film and developing, more people are taking more photos than ever before.

But back to the question: of all these millions of photos, how many are ever actually printed? Most pictures live their lives on a computer screen, where we see a small version of a photo at 72dpi. In fact, if we want to share them in emails or add them to webpages, we have to make them even smaller to travel in cyberspace.

Of course there are people who print a lot of their photos. I encourage everybody to print their best photos, frame them, hang them, give them as gifts...after all, what is the purpose of all these photos if we don't do something with them? But do we need a lot of megapixels to create a good print?

In most cases, the answer is no. The vast majority of printed photos are 6x4 or 5x7 inches, and very occasionally 8x12 inches. Very few photographers (apart from professionals) will ever print a poster sized enlargement. They might think they will; but almost certainly, they won't.

So, do we really need all these megapixels? I equate it to buying a car than can travel 200 kilometres per hour in a country where the speed limit is 100. The power is there, and it may give some inward pride to know it is there...but it is wasted power all the same. Apart from bragging rights, in some ways you equally well served by an old hatchback that just gets you from Point A to Point B.

You can produce good, high quality prints up to 8x12 inch (20x30cm), and probably larger, with a five megapixel camera. This is not a compromise; I doubt you would see any improvement in print quality taking the same picture on a ten megapixel camera. Certainly you would see a difference if you enlarged the photo to poster size, but (as we have discussed), very few people reading this article are likely to do that.

Please do not see these comments as negative. I would never suggest that anyone who has bought a more powerful camera has wasted their money. Your upmarket camera probably came with an extra feature or two that adds to the fun you can have with photography. And of course, it is nice to know you could make giant prints from your photos...even though we both know you possibly never will.

Rather, I want to encourage all those people who didn't buy the top-of-the-range camera and wish they did, or are currently agonizing over how much to spend on their next camera. If you want a camera that takes a decent photo, for use online or to produce small and medium sized prints, you don't need to overextend your budget. Buy the camera you can reasonably afford and be happy with it - it will do the job for you.

If there is one important buying tip that is more important than the megapixels, it is to find a camera with a good quality lens. If your photos are not crystal clear and sharp when they are small, they are not going to improve by being blown up to larger sizes. In fact, all you would acheive is to make your blurry photo bigger and blurrier.

Just as importantly, once you have your camera, learn to use it. Most digital cameras come with manual settings that allow you to be truly creative once you know the basic photography techniques. If you look at any camera club competition, you will find that the winner is not the person with the most expensive camera. Invariably, it is the person with the imagination and skills to get the best out of the camera they have.

Andrew Goodall believes that with a small amount of guidance, anyone can become a better photographer, no matter what sort of camera they have. Andrew's ebook "Photography in Plain English" is a perfect place to start. Shopping Around For Your New HDTV

Subscribe in a Reader

DON'T FORGET TO COMMENT ON THIS ARTICLE

by Victor Epand

HDTVs have become very popular very quickly, and with the switchover from analogue to digital by broadcasters very shortly, the need for a digital television is not one based purely on aesthetics. Certainly there us a great deal to be said as far as design is concerned for having a smart flat panel mounted on the wall in the living room, and it takes up a great deal less space as well. But there is more to simply choosing the size colour of the frame of your new HDTV, and some of the options can be a little confusing to the unwary and those still reeling from the shock of seeing television in colour.

The first thing is that not all HDTVs are built equally. There are different levels of quality, and different ways of formatting the picture. These differences are too technical to be included in this article, but if you are in the market to buy a new HDTV it would be well worth your while purchasing a magazine that can give you reviews and advice on current models, or doing a little more research online.

One of the most obvious choices that you will need to make is whether to go for a traditional looking direct view or tube television, or a flat panel. The advantage of direct view is that they are usually much cheaper. They also offer better contrast of colour with darker shades (in other words black looks blacker) and the viewing angle is much greater. This means that in a living room it will make no difference where you sit, whereas with some flat panel televisions if you sit anywhere other than directly in front of it you tend to get a loss of detail, loss of colour and eventually loss of the picture entirely.

Make sure you are aware of the difference between flat panel and flat screen televisions - because they are not one and the same thing. All too often people tend to use the terms interchangeably, but they are quite different. Flat screen televisions are simply standard televisions with a large tube, but instead of the base of the tube (the screen) being convex (curved), it is completely flat. This gives a sharper and less distorted picture. Flat panel televisions on the other hand are the very narrow type which can be mounted on the wall and take up very little depth at all. The screens are also flat, but unlike the tube sets, there is almost no depth to the television itself.

Another thing to look for is the choice of flat panel HDTVs between LCD and Plasma. The LCD televisions will be very much cheaper, but offer a very narrow viewing angle. Plasma television sets have a wider viewing angle, which suits more homes that have wide living rooms rather than narrow ones. The problem with Plasma televisions though is that they are prone to 'image burn'/. This is where an image, if displayed on the screen constantly for an extended period of time, it can become burned onto the screen so that it is still partially visible at all times. This can cause unwanted ghosting and deterioration of the picture. This is more likely if the screen is used to play video games, as many games have portions of the screen where buttons, options and menus sit that are always visible and can end up being displayed for hours at a time.

The Courtesan

Subscribe in a Reader

DON'T FORGET TO COMMENT ON THIS ARTICLE

by -Sheryll Cross-

Most of us today think that a courtesan is nothing more than a glamorized prostitute. While it may be true that an 18th century-Parisian courtesan provided sexual services just as a 21st century- British Columbia escort does, much, much more were expected of the courtesans of old.

A courtesan needs to have more than physical beauty and expert skills in bed. To rule the social circles of Renaissance Italy or 18th century London, a courtesan, for one, has to be intelligent, witty and able to hold her own well in conversations. She needs to be skilled and knowledgeable in the arts, sophisticated, well-mannered and well-read. In short, a true courtesan needs to be the perfect companion, partner and lover.

Their many attractive possessions provided courtesans with a lot of benefits and advantages apart from the obvious monetary gains. Because they are regarded to be intelligent and conversant, they had access to intellectual discussions and debates (a privilege majority of educated women during their time did not enjoy). Pericles' famous "constant companion" Aspasia for example, was so renowned for her intellect that the great Socrates himself brought people to hear her speak --- a true feat considering that during this time (and the next few hundreds of years that followed) women were generally confined to their homes and frilly ballrooms.

The fact that many men considered the beautiful courtesans to be infinitely more delightful and entertaining companions than their wives allowed these female escorts were able to influence many of the important decisions made by the men. Using their companionship as a powerful bargaining chip, they asked for money, social advancement and political power, and the men willingly provided them with all these. Through their skills and charms, many courtesans were also able to sway the decisions made by their benefactors in their favor. Not only did the courtesans have the hearts of their benefactors, they held power over their minds as well.

The clout of Madame de Pompadour over her benefactor King Louis XV was so great for example, that the respected and well-known Austrian diplomat Wenzel Anton Graf Kaunitz actually asked her to arbitrate in the negotiations for the Treaty of Versailles.

King Charles II's royal mistress Agnes Sorel on the other hand, was so influential that, according to speculations, the king's son ordered her murder just to halt her growing power over the king and the French court.

With extramarital affairs having become more discreet, the society loosening up on its restrictions on women and everything becoming institutionalized, beautiful mistresses and lovers can no longer openly wield their influence over powerful individuals using charm and seduction. The escorts in Vancouver who take the liberty to call themselves "modern courtesans" can protest all they want, but the days of the true courtesan are now over.

Successful Child Actress: Keka Palmer

Born Lauren Keyana Palmer, you may remember Keke from her performance in the critically acclaimed, award-winning film Akeelah and the Bee, but Keke was far from wet behind the ears when she starred in her role as Akeelah Anderson.

As a small child growing up in Robbins, Illinois, Keke showed her parents Laurence and Sharon Palmer that her performance skills packed a lot of power when she belted out "Jesus Loves Me" in her church choir.

In their home recording studio, Keke's mother Sharon helped Keke harness her vocal abilities, and both parents were dedicated to taking her on auditions and helping her to perfect her acting skills. In 2004 Keke landed her first big role in Barbershop 2: Back in Business playing the part of Queen Latifah's niece. At this point, it was more than apparent that Keke had star-potential, so the family left behind their newly purchased home and their secure jobs to head to California.

Keke's accomplished resume includes a role on the CBS series Cold Case, a national K-Mart commercial, and even a Screen Actors Guild Award nomination for her role in Wool Cap. She is currently the youngest actress to ever receive a nomination in a Lead Actress category. She has also won the 2007 NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Actress in a Motion Picture for her role in Akeelah and the Bee. She also co-starred in the highly-rated Disney Channel Original movie Jump In.

Though her acting career has blossomed, Keke considers music her first love and has signed with Atlantic Records. Her newest album "So Uncool" includes an ode to her Chicago roots. The Palmer's decision to leave the Chicago area in pursuit of Keke's dreams turned out to be a good one, but they were definitely challenging times. In his interview with Children In Film, Laurence Palmer talks about the challenges of being a Power Parent.

LP: We came to California in November of 2003 and home-schooled our children under the Illinois guidelines for a semester until we found out about the California program Options For Youth, which Keke still attends and our oldest daughter Loreal graduated from this past spring.

CIF: What are the challenges of dealing with a school-aged child who is also working?
LP: Keke is a very social kid. Our main challenge with her is finding time where she can socialize with other children. We make sure she gets to some birthday parties, skating parties and movie outings with her friends. My wife Sharon or our 18 year old daughter Loreal or I accompany her depending on the outing and the other parent's participation.

On Getting Started in Show Biz

CIF: What actors inspired your child (in her work) or you to get her into this field?
LP: Keke was inspired by Brandy, Rave, Tia and Timara Mowery and Kyla Pratt. My wife and I were professional theater actors in Chicago and I think that helps us in understanding her desire to do this and how she approaches this business.

CIF: How many auditions did you go on before the first job?
LP: Keke's first audition was for the Lion King in Chicago. She made the Saturday cut and on Sunday, out of 400 kids, she made it down to the last 15 before she got cut. For a kid who never had an acting lesson and only did a couple of school plays, we thought that was great. After that we got her an agent. Before we signed with the agent she auditioned for American Juniors where she won a trip to California and made it to the top 33. Her first audition with the agency was for Barbershop 2 and she got the part!

On Working in Entertainment

CIF: Does your child want to be in entertainment for her whole life or does she want to do something else as an adult?
LP: Keke has a desire to eventually produce and direct after she finishes college, but now she wants to do this, and as long as she keeps her grades up she can. She can also say at anytime that she's done with acting and doesn't want to do it anymore and we will take her out of the business.

On Parenting a Child Actor

CIF: What is the biggest mistake you've made as a parent in entertainment?
LP: Nothing comes to mind – Keke's only been in the business for four years and we are still learning the business. We usually try to adapt and adjust to the situations that come into our life. Years from now I'm sure it will be easy to answer that question.

CIF: Are you ever afraid that your child will fall inline with the negative image of child stars?
LP: I would have to say yes. We just continue to go to church, pray together and remain parents. She has to follow our rules and she has to respect her older sister and she has to be an example to her younger brother and sister.

CIF: What advice would you give other parents just starting out?
LP: I would advise them to always remain parents. Kids can not play on sports teams with bad grades or bad attitudes and they should not be allowed to act if they display those same qualities. As a child you don't have the right to act – it is a privilege. As parents we have to let our children know constantly what is right and what is wrong. We must teach them to respect themselves and others.

On Children In Film

CIF: What is your current relationship with Children in Film? Are they/were they a good resource for you?
LP: When Keke was auditioning for American Juniors, we were introduced to Children In Film because we had to get a work permit. Twenty of the top 33 kids were going to be on TV, so all 33 kids had to have permits because the top 20 would be notified by mail and would have to start work upon that notification. My wife and I continue to use Children In Film's services for obtaining our work permits as well as for a resource for some child labor laws and guidelines and any questions we have that we think they can help us with.

It can be really difficult to take pictures when there are objects moving like crazy. Action shots are hard. Sports photos, planes, cars, people running, it is all pretty hard to capture if you don't know some solid digital photography tips for how to photograph motion. This article will give you a basic understanding how to take these shots.

If you have an automatic camera then you're going to have a difficult time taking action shots properly. End of story. Hopefully, you will have some Preset settings like "sport" mode and the like. Other than that, you really have to just cross your fingers and hope your camera knows exactly what you want.

For most cameras, you do have the ability to manipulate some settings. This will give you more power over taking action photos. The most important thing to manipulate is the shutter speed.

Shutter Basics:
If you don't know, the shutter is what controls how long light is let into the camera. If you use a long shutter like 1/30 more light will be let in. The effects of this when taking fact action photos is that the motion is blurred. It can make for some cool shots with the object in motion blurred but everything else not.

A faster shutter speed like 1/500 does the opposite. It will let in light very quickly and result in shots with motion frozen. For example, you could take a picture of a car that swooshes by and to your eye seems like a blur. However, your camera will have captured that car in crisp clear detail.

The easiest way to use the shutter is to set your camera to shutter priority mode. This will let you set the shutter speed to your liking and the other settings are automatically set for you.
